The journey of a Tahitian pearl: from ocean to atelier
A Tahitian pearl carries its origins on its surface — the deep colour that comes only from the black-lipped oyster of French Polynesia, the overtones that change with the angle of light. At Isaac Westman, every Tahitian pearl in the collection is chosen by hand at the source, before it ever reaches the atelier.
Born in the South Pacific
Tahitian pearls form inside Pinctada margaritifera — the black-lipped oyster — in the warm lagoons of French Polynesia. Each pearl takes two to three years to develop, its colour shaped by the oyster's surroundings: deep blacks, greens, peacock blues, and silvers, all naturally produced.
Isaac Westman sources directly from the trusted farms where these conditions are met consistently. The result is a smaller selection, but a more uniform one.
Selected at the source
Forty years in the trade has taught us that the most important decision about a pearl is made before it leaves the source. Our team selects each pearl in person for luster, surface, and overtone. The signature Tahitian pieces in our collection typically run 9–12mm — chosen for the balance of size and refinement.
Finished in New York
The selected pearls arrive at our New York atelier, where they're paired with metal and accent stones to atelier specification. The mount, the post, the prong work — all are finished to the standard we've held for four decades. Every Tahitian piece is reviewed and approved by the atelier before it carries our name.
A piece to be kept
A Tahitian pearl is meant to be worn often — pearls maintain their luster on the skin. Apply perfume and lotion before the piece, never after. Wipe gently with a soft cloth after wear and store flat in a fabric pouch. We restring and inspect Tahitian pieces as part of our complimentary annual service.
Enchanting. Intriguing. Refined.
