How to Care for Pearls: Timeless Tips to Keep the Luster Alive
Why Pearls Need Gentle, Intentional Care
Unlike diamonds or sapphires, pearls are organic gems made primarily of nacre. Their surface is soft (about 2.5–4.5 on the Mohs scale) and porous, which means they absorb oils, perfumes, and moisture easily. A few careless habits can dull that signature luster in months instead of decades.
The good news? The right routine is simple, elegant, and becomes second nature once you start.
Your Daily Pearl Care Routine
- Put pearls on last Apply makeup, perfume, hairspray, and lotions first. These products contain alcohols, acids, and oils that can etch or cloud the nacre over time.
- Wipe after every wear Use a soft, lint-free cloth (we include one with every purchase) to gently remove any skin oils, makeup, or environmental residue. A quick 10-second wipe keeps luster bright and prevents buildup.
- Let them breathe After wearing, lay your pearls flat on a soft surface for an hour or two before storing. This allows any absorbed moisture to evaporate.
How to Clean Your Pearls Safely
Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam, or harsh chemicals on pearls—they can dissolve the nacre.
The ISAAC WESTMAN®-approved method:
- Mix a few drops of mild, pH-neutral soap (baby shampoo works beautifully) in lukewarm distilled water.
- Dampen a soft cloth or cotton swab—never soak the pearls.
- Gently wipe each pearl individually.
- Rinse the cloth in clean water and wipe again to remove any soap residue.
- Pat dry with a fresh soft towel and air-dry completely before storing.
For strand necklaces or bracelets, do this only when truly needed—usually every 6–12 months is plenty. Over-cleaning can loosen knots or stretch silk thread.
Proper Storage: Your Pearls’ Safe Haven
Pearls love humidity but hate direct contact with other jewelry.
- Store in the soft pouch or box we provide—never in a plastic bag (it traps moisture and can cause mildew).
- Keep them separate from harder gems. A diamond tennis bracelet next to a pearl strand will scratch the pearls over time.
- Ideal spot: A cool, dry drawer away from direct sunlight and heat vents. Avoid bathrooms (too humid) and sunny windowsills (fades color).
Pro tip: If you wear pearls frequently, consider a dedicated jewelry drawer insert with soft compartments. Your pearls will thank you.
What to Avoid at All Costs
- Chlorine pools or hot tubs (bleaches and weakens nacre)
- Hair products, body sprays, or sunscreen
- Rough surfaces—pearls scratch easily
- Leaving them in a hot car (heat can crack the surface)
- Wearing them to the gym or while cooking (sweat + heat = dulling)
Caring for Pearl + Diamond or Gemstone Pieces
Many ISAAC WESTMAN® designs pair pearls with diamonds. Treat the pearl section as described above, but you can gently clean the metal and stones with a soft brush and warm soapy water. Just keep the brush away from the pearl itself.
When to Bring Them In for Professional Care
- Every 1–2 years for a deep clean and polish (we offer this complimentary for registered pieces)
- If the silk thread stretches or knots loosen—restringing prevents loss of pearls
- For heirloom pieces you want restored to their original brilliance
A Little Care Goes a Lifetime
Your pearls aren’t just jewelry—they’re stories. The Tahitian pearl that traveled from a Polynesian lagoon to your collarbone. The Akoya studs passed down from your grandmother. The freshwater strand you bought to celebrate a milestone.
When you care for them with intention, you’re not just preserving beauty—you’re honoring the journey.
