A pair of Akoya cultured pearls. Held by screw-backs.

Japanese Akoya cultured pearls — chosen for the mirror-bright luster characteristic of saltwater Japan — set on fourteen-karat gold posts with screw backs rather than friction. Pearl size scales with the variant from six to nine millimeters; the back gives a more secure fit than friction.
