Engagement Season: When to Buy the Ring and How to Plan

· 3 min read

Engagement season, and how to plan the ring with time to spare.

A large share of proposals happen between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day. Families are together, there is time off, and the year feels like it wants an ending worth marking.

If you are proposing this season, now is a good moment to begin. There is still comfortable time for a December proposal.

The timeline that works: settle the budget, her size, and the setting first, then order with margin before the date rather than after it.

Work backward from the date

When What happens
First Decide budget. Work out her ring size and style preference.
Next Choose the stone and setting. Place the order.
When it arrives Review it. Adjust if needed.
Before the date Final sizing. In hand, early.

December is the busiest month in fine jewelry, so build in a little margin. Call us at 1-347-389-0766 and we'll confirm your delivery date.

Finding her size without spoiling it

The reliable methods, in order:

  1. Borrow a ring she already wears on the correct finger. Trace the inside circle, or press it into soap. Even an approximate diameter helps.
  2. Ask someone who knows. A sister, a best friend, her mother. They are usually delighted to be asked and better at secrecy than you would expect.
  3. Use a ring she wears on another finger as a reference point and size up. Imprecise, but better than guessing blind.

And the honest fallback: size up if unsure. A loose ring can be worn until it is resized. A ring that does not fit past the knuckle cannot be worn at all, which is a difficult moment in an otherwise good one. Ring sizes 3.5 through 8.5 are standard for us; most resizing is straightforward.

The budget conversation

Ignore the salary rules. "Two months' salary" was an advertising slogan, not a guideline, and it has cost people more anxiety than it has bought anyone happiness.

The useful frame is: what can you spend without it affecting the first year of your marriage? That number is personal, and it is the correct one.

Where the money actually goes, and where not to spend it, is covered in how much should an engagement ring cost.

Shopping together, or surprising her

More couples now choose the ring together, and there is nothing lost in it — the proposal is still a surprise, and she gets a ring she will wear for fifty years.

If you are surprising her, gather evidence rather than guessing. What metal is the rest of her jewelry? Does she wear anything ornate, or is everything plain? Has she ever commented on someone else's ring? People telegraph this more than they realize.

When in doubt, choose a classic solitaire. It is one of the most chosen settings for a reason, it flatters nearly every hand, and it can be reset later if she wants something different.

What to settle before you order

  • Metal — platinum, or 14K/18K in white or yellow. Match the rest of her jewelry.
  • Setting — solitaire, halo, hidden halo, three-stone.
  • Center stone shape — the most personal decision, and it affects price.
  • Certification — insist on independent grading at 1.00 carat and above. Our center stones come with a GIA or IGI report at 1.00 ct and above.

One thing worth doing after

Insure it. A ring worn daily on a hand that opens doors and carries bags is exposed, and most home policies cover jewelry only to a low limit. It is inexpensive, and the moment to do it is the week you take delivery — not after something happens.

Start with the bridal collection, or read the 4Cs of diamonds before choosing a stone. If you want to talk it through, reach us at sales@isaacwestman.com or 1-347-389-0766.
